I'm currently reading Inazo Nitobe's Bushido: The Soul of Japan. It's a Japanese Quaker bureaucrat's attempt at relating what 'Bushido' is to an American audience. It was published in 1900. He paints many references to European Knighthood and Chinese philosophy to try and explain many different aspects of 'Bushido'. So far it has been good. He would later have positions in the League of Nations and United Nations, among other things.
